Nagi S. El-Saghir, MD, FACP

Dr El-Saghir graduated from Free University of Brussels, Brussels, Belgium in June 1978. He completed his training in Internal Medicine at The Brooklyn Hospital-State University of New York, and Hematology Oncology at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center-Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York and is certified by the American Boards of Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. He served on the clinical Faculty of Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Oakwood Hospital and Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan before joining the American University of Beirut in 1993. He is Director of the Breast Center of Excellence at the Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute of the American University of Beirut (AUB) Medical Center and is Founding President of the Lebanese Society of Medical Oncology (LSMO), and Past-President of The Lebanese Society of Internal Medicine.
His research and publications are focused on breast cancer and young women, genetic mutations, treatment guidelines, early detection, awareness, patient advocacy, and resource-stratified guidelines. He published pioneering articles on epidemiology of cancer in Lebanon and breast cancer in young women in Lebanon and Arab countries, and locally advanced breast cancer and breast cancer in developing countries. He has over 90 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is a regular speaker at Lebanese, Arab and international oncology conferences. He won a major Ethnic Research Initiative ERI grant and published the first large landmark article on BRCA mutations in ethnic Lebanese Arab women in 2015.
Dr. El-Saghir’s International activities include panel membership and co-authorship of Resource-Stratified guidelines of the Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) and International Consensus Guidelines Advanced Breast Cancer (ABC1, ABC2 and ABC3), NCCN-MENA Guidelines, and 2015 UICC Essential Medication Lists. He serves on several ASCO, ESMO, EORTC, ESO, WHO committees, He is Co-Chair of ASCO Guidelines Advisory Group for the Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee, and Immediate Past-Chair of ASCO International Affairs Committee. He serves as regular peer reviewer for Medical Journals, International Editor of JCO for the Middle East and North Africa, Deputy Editor for The Breast (2006-2013) and Editorial Board Member of the newly launched ASCO’s Journal of Global Oncology.
Dr. El-Saghir is author of “ABC of Breast Diseases” in Arabic and Awareness Booklet “Knowledge Road Map to Cure” and he is President of the Lebanese Breast Cancer Foundation. He leads major breast cancer awareness campaigns, including regular public lectures, media appearances, pink campaigns, lighting up of Landmark Raouche Rocks and Sidon Castle, Human Pink Ribbon formation and Mother’s Day awareness events. His research, publications, media interventions, books, and community activities are recognized to have led to significant down-staging of breast cancer in Lebanon and improved patients’ outcome. For that he has received many awards including the Medal of Honor for Achievements and the National Cedar Medal of Honor -Rank Officer from the last two Presidents of Lebanon, as well as the Lebanese Society of Medical Oncology LSMO Excellence Award, Lebanese Order of Physicians LOP, Cairo University, League for Lebanese Woman’s Rights, Arab Medical Association Against Cancer awards and many others.
